Guitar Fundamentals: Developing Parts to Help Our Church Sing

In this video, Bertie grills session guitarist Phil Short on his approach to playing in a church setting. Alongside his work with world-renown worship leaders including Noel Robinson, Mark Beswick and Devon Kauflin, Phil has toured and performed with major label artists Westlife, Chipmunk and Tyler James.

You can expect some golden nuggets of wisdom from a hugely experienced, humble musician. This video is aimed at those who serve with music and live sound, but everyone will be interested to hear some of Phil’s thoughts.

Interview topics:

  1. developing textural guitar vocabulary to better serve the congregation in corporate sung worship
  2. building a great tone that supports the guitar part and sits well in a mix
  3. heart approach to playing a simple idea that serves the arrangement rather than a complex guitar feature that’s more fun to play

We’d love to hear what you think. How do you approach playing in church? Do you find it difficult to balance personal preference of style with what best serves your congregation? Connect with us on facebook or in the comments below.
